Radiator distributors have firmly taken their niche in the market of individual heat metering devices. They are the main solution for individual metering in buildings with vertical design of heating systems. In spite of extensive discussions, vertical distribution is still widely used in new construction.  All such buildings must be equipped with distributors in accordance with the requirements of Federal Law No. 261 "On energy conservation".  After commissioning and occupation in most of them operation companies start calculating heating fees taking into consideration readings from distributors.  However many consumers and specialists know that distributors are not meter in a common sense.

Specifics of Maintaining Supply Air Parameters in Surgery Rooms
A. A. Borodkin, Candidate of Engineering, Technical Director at LLC Engineering Bareau VINDEKO
Keywords: clean room, air distribution, laminar ceiling, HEPA filter, constant air flowrate regulator
Surgery rooms are considered especially clean rooms. For air distribution they usually use laminar ceilings, sometimes with 14th class HEPA filters. In the course of operation the filter resistance can increase five-fold.  After four-fold drop of pressure at the filter the air flow through the filter can become twice as little. This is unacceptable. CAV regulators (constant air volume regulators) are being used today to solve this problem. They compensate for an increase in the filter resistance by reducing their own resistance. This article tries to understand whether CAV-regulators are really this indispensable.

P. A. Havanov, Professor, Doctor of Engineering, Scientific Research Institution "Moscow State Construction University"
A. S. Chulenev, Assistant, Engineer, Scientific Research Institution "Moscow State Construction University"
Keywords: solid fuel, autonomous heat supply, heat generator, furnace, fire bar
An alternative to solid fuel for Russian consumers who need autonomous heat supply is almost always solid fuel. The article looks at boilers operating on different types of solid fuel - all types of coal, peat, wood, pellets, different types of briquettes and production waste.
The national industry does not produce low-power fully-mechanized autonomous boilers operating on solid fuel. Foreign manufacturers widely advertise low-power boilers (including up to 100 kW) with complete or partial mechanization of processes, designed only for high quality fuel, produced and supplied according to the corresponding EU standard. And even in this case the price of equipment is an order higher than of the similar equipment operating on natural gas or liquid fuel.

Use of Quasimembranes for Measurement and Regulation of Air Flow in Systems with Quantitative Regulation

E. Ya. Kernerman, Candidate of Engineering, Head of Expert-Analytical Bureau of NP “AVOK Siberia”.
A. I. Muhin, Candidate of Engineering, Executive Director of NP “AVOK Siberia”.
M. Nudelman, PE, ASHRAE Member

Keywords: quasimembrane, ventilation, air flow, air flow regulation

One of the main methods for reduction of energy costs of operation of multizone ventilation and air conditioning systems is regulation of their capacity based on changes in load in serviced rooms. Use of adaptive systems with quantitative regulation becomes efficient only when the regulating algorithm is based on the information on the air flow size (air flowrate) continuously controlled in the process of the systems operation in different modes.

This methods includes measurement and regulation of not only the air flowrate in individual zones using terminal units of VAV, FPB, etc. types, but also the total air quantity coming into the system. This allows for development of an optimal system operation algorithm and improvement of the energy efficiency of its operation.

This article is dedicated to a narrower question: optimization of the methods of measurement of the total air flowrate coming into the system (or removed from it).

Energy Efficient Ventilation of Hot Shops in Public Catering Enterprises

A. V. Livchak, Candidate of Engineering, Halton Vice-President
Keywords: air flowrate, aerodynamic characteristics, CFD models, adaptive ventilation, balancing valve

Restaurants are considered public buildings with the highest specific energy consumption per unit of area. And the main energy consumers are kitchen equipment and HVAC system, their total contribution is up to 80% of the total energy consumed by restaurants. The path to development of an energy efficient design of a restaurant always starts from a heat source – from the food production technology and kitchen equipment. Low efficiency devices of high power additionally heat up the production area and require high air exchange rate, i.e. increase the energy consumption for HVAC. More efficient kitchen equipment, such as induction cookers and combination steam ovens, spends less energy on heat production and does not heat up the production area as much, thus reducing the energy consumption for kitchen ventilation and cooling.

The next step towards an energy efficient design is HVAC system optimization – the subject of this article. Air flowrate through kitchen exhaust is the most important element of an HVAC design, since it dictates the amount of energy consumed by hot shop ventilation system. And really, the higher air flowrate through local exhausts leads to higher consumption by motors of exhaust and supply fans, and the energy required for cooling or heating of air supplied to production area to compensate for the exhaust.
